Description
The city of Arlington community chose to replace their only high school with a design that brings together the various representations of Arlington, with the new school anchored as a community hub.

The new Arlington High School is located on a 52-acre property south of downtown Arlington. School facilities will occupy the 46 acres of the land that are suitable for construction.

The 214,000-square-foot school will house 1,600 students. The comprehensive facility and core open spaces were sized for a future capacity of 2,000 students.

The building structure features mainly concrete masonry bearing walls and steel brace frames. The ground floor is slab-on-grade construction and the second floor consists of composite decking supported at wide flange beams.

The imprint of the school models two hands intertwined. The hands represent community. One hand symbolizes the older, traditional and rural Arlington. The other hand exhibits the emerging, progressive and suburban Arlington that has a global mindset.

Buildings are laid out as intertwining fingers of the hands. The organization of supplemental facilities was carried out to extend the hands over the lay of the land.

The facilities of the school are separated into five distinguishable areas: An arts/humanities house, business/social services house, science/technology house, fitness/wellness area, and the resources/core spaces area.

The design incorporates pre-engineered buildings into the facilities for the ag/tech programs and the plan science program.

The academic programs come together in the commons area and are expressed in the architecture. The commons space is shaped by elements of both progressive Arlington and familiar Arlington.

Articulation and blending of both visions of Arlington into the school serve to weave the two facets of the community harmoniously into the space.

Other facility features include a performing arts center that will seat 630, as well as a 2,000-seat stadium.

The school district recently approved $3 million in alternates that include playfields and grandstands.
