Description The Highline Community College/Central Washington University Higher Education Center is a collaboration designed to expand higher education opportunities to the residents of South King County. Through this partnership, the Higher Ed Center will offer time- and place-bound students the opportunity to complete their education at the associate, bachelor’s or master’s degree levels in a variety of fields. This project improves access to higher education while creating facilities that are extremely economical. The two institutions will heavily use the space, and by sharing student support costs (libraries, student services, fitness facilities and parking), it becomes a wise investment of state tax dollars. The Higher Education Center will be a new three-story, 85,000-gross-square-foot multipurpose building housing 26 classroom spaces, including seven distance learning classrooms, four science laboratories and eight computer classrooms. There will 76 student and faculty offices and 1,000 square feet of student study space. The building structural is concrete with post-tensioned beams. The enclosure consists of stained concrete, structural stud framing, metal panel, unitized window and curtain wall. The roof is a modified bituminous membrane system.
Interior finishes consist of carpet, vinyl flooring, acoustical tile ceilings, and painted and acoustical-paneled gypsum wallboard. With its wood flooring, colored wall light panels, and custom bamboo bench and table student study casework, the main corridor and student study area on the second level combine to provide a welcoming “main street” entry into the Higher Education Center.
