Description

M.A. Mortenson Co. is constructing the Washington Veterans Home Skilled Nursing Facility at Retsil. This facility is a major step forward in helping the state honor its veterans.

The Retsil project creates a 240-bed skilled nursing facility and a dining facility to provide a continuum of care to meet the needs of the veterans. The project includes a new pharmacy, physical therapy and administrative offices.

One of the innovations on the project is the use of natural cooling in lieu of air conditioning. This is the first skilled nursing facility in the state to be approved with natural cooling. Natural cooling works by creating air movement through the building in a controlled manner, resulting in lower operating costs.

The building system consists of precast and cast-in-place concrete decks and steel-frame structure with exterior masonry, metal panel and curtainwall forming the enclosure systems. The story heights have been increased to 12 feet to promote natural cooling. The concrete precast decks and slabs act as a part of the natural cooling system.

The work is occurring in an occupied facility, which presents challenges to the construction team.

Similar to working in a hospital, disruptions to the operations can have an adverse effect on the health of the residents. A detailed “disruption avoidance procedure” was developed to eliminate those impacts.

Working in an occupied facility also requires phased construction. Crews are completing the kitchen in April 2004 to allow for demolition of the existing kitchen, which is in the way of the final wing of the facility. This phased construction requires close coordination between the facility and the construction team.
