Description Designed by Northwest Architectural Company, the new Bethel High School addresses the problem of class size in an innovative way. The design includes three teaching “houses” for each grade level, creating the effect of smaller schools within the school. Each house will contain the full range of services and facilities, and foster smaller learning communities within the 1,300-member student body. This decentralized approach will preserve a small-school environment for each grade, and promote student achievement through smaller classes. When finished, the 177,000-square-foot facility will include a new Community Union, two gyms, a library, science facility, applied technology and arts facilities, an auditorium, athletic facilities, and special education rooms. The planning team, consisting of community volunteers, students, staff and architects, agreed that the facility should meet the needs of the students as well as those of the local community. With this in mind, the Community Union was conceived as a meeting place for students, as well as a zone of interaction with the surrounding community.
Adjacent to the main entry, the Community Union will have a large computer lab, commons and cafeteria, and will be open for use after school hours for various local community functions.
