Description The Madison Middle School project entails renovation and modernization of the historic school to accommodate 900 students in grades six through eight. The school, designated as a historic landmark by the city of Seattle in 2002, will encompass more than 120,000 square feet of space on 7.9 acres when completed. The Seattle School District is undertaking modernizations of the middle school to preserve the historic buildings, as well as keep up with functional demands of a present day school. The original three-story school building dates back to 1929. An addition was built in 1931. In 1971, a gymnasium was added just south of the main building. Modified collegiate Gothic details characterized the design, originally by Floyd Naramore. A community-based design review board assisted in planning the renovation. Phase 2 renovation work recently began after Phase 1 hazardous materials abatement, demolition, utilities installation, earthwork and erosion control were finished. Modernization under Phase 2 consists of constructing a 50,000-square-foot addition, which will include a cafeteria on the west side of the historic main building. As a result of the school district’s focus on sustainability measures, this landmark school will have an alternative heating and cooling system in the form of a geothermal heat pump system. Heat pumps for the school will be fed by circulation pumps from a closed vertical well field that will be located under the sports field.
The project received funding under the 2001 Building Excellence II Levy, which is providing funding for 17 Seattle School District projects.
