#17. Cedar Hills Landfill, Area 5 — Stage 3 closure, Area 6 — Phase 2 | |
Cost: $19,929,614 (original contract)
16645 228th Ave. S.W., Maple Valley Start of construction: September 2003 Expected completion date: October 2004 Owner: King County, Solid Waste Division |
Description The Cedar Hills Landfill project will prepare Area 6 to accept mixed solid waste and complete intermediate measures for Area 5 closure. All mixed-solid waste generated in King County outside of the city of Seattle is taken to and managed by the Cedar Hills Landfill, which spans 920 acres. In order to safely process the waste, the landfill must operate disposal piles in various stages of decomposition and continually plan for new sites that can accommodate the large volumes of material that need to be disposed of. Environmental concerns are a significant issue when dealing with the vast quantities of waste that landfills handle. Landfill processing must comply with strict environmental regulations. Constructing a new site for refuse disposal in Area 6 requires excavating and lining a large pit. The development calls for installation of geo-synthetic materials and pipes, and will include construction of extraction wells and pumping facilities. The wells and pumping facilities are necessary to manage the gas generated by the decomposing waste. The project also involves Stage 3 closure of the existing refuse disposal site at Area 5. The staged closure requires installing intermediate cover systems for partial closure and preparing the final covering systems for the long-term Area 5 closure.
Final closure of Area 5 will occur in Stage 4 once Area 6 is operational and ready to accept waste.
