Cost: $46,343,497 (original contract)
Port of Tacoma Road, Tacoma Start of construction: Nov. 1, 2003 Expected completion date: Sept. 30, 2004 Owner: Port of Tacoma |
Description Work is under way on Pierce County Terminal, the largest capital improvement project in the Port of Tacoma’s 86-year history and reportedly the biggest container terminal in the United States north of Los Angeles. In a series of linked projects, the port is widening the waterway and turn basin, relocating utilities, constructing a dedicated intermodal yard, making improvements to adjacent streets, and improving infrastructure at the terminal. The intermodal yard is the largest of these linked projects, and is the centerpiece of the port’s $341 million capital development program. The expanded facilities, with new storage areas and track work, will allow for faster off-loading from container ships onto the national rail and highway network. A gate complex with nine inbound lanes, scales, six outbound lanes, and an administrative building are also under construction. A maintenance/intermodal tower, marine building, and reefer and chassis repair facility will also be built on the site under a separate contract.
Icon Materials has constructed other large Port of Tacoma projects, such as the Blair Terminal and the $40 million, 144-acre Marshall Avenue Auto Facility.
