Description

This project is one of the first segments in Central Link Light Rail’s planned 14-mile route between Convention Place and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

Kiewit Pacific Co. will construct the 2.6-mile rail line from Royal Brougham in the Sodo area to the Operations and Maintenance Facility, which is being constructed under a separate contract.

The contract calls for laying rail tracks between Interstate 5 and Metro’s E-3 Busway, as well as constructing the Lander Street Station, which is one of the major points on the rail line serving south Seattle.

The Lander Street Station will serve commuters to and from the Starbucks Center on First Avenue, the Seattle School District headquarters on Lander Street and the U.S. Post Office. This area contains some of the largest employers in the region and is a critical point in the daily commute.

Kiewit Pacific will have to plan work around sports events at Safeco Field and Seahawks Stadium, as well as negotiate work in areas where access is limited because of physical obstacles.

Work includes modifications to the E-3 Busway to reroute Metro traffic and a 10-foot-wide bike path to accommodate commuters who will use the new light-rail system on their commute.
