#9. Pierce County Terminal wharf construction, Phase 2 dredging and Slip 5 mitigation, Phase 2 | |
Cost: $38,860,270 (original contract)
2500 Alexander Ave. E., Tacoma Start of construction: July 18, 2003 Expected completion date: Dec. 21, 2004 Owner: Port of Tacoma |
Description In late 2004, the Port of Tacoma will begin operations at the new Pierce County Terminal, the largest construction project in the port’s 86-year history. Located at the end of the 2.65-mile Blair Waterway, it will have a dedicated intermodal yard, several berths and associated infrastructure. When finished, the terminal will be the base of operations for Evergreen Pacific Corp., a Taiwanese shipping company that handles a large part of the port’s trade. In a joint venture, Manson Construction and Traylor Pacific are constructing some of the essential infrastructure components. Work includes a new 1,400-foot-long wharf structure that is large enough to support several wide-gauge container cranes. Manson/Traylor is also responsible for dredging nearly 1.5 million cubic yards of sediment and transporting it to a disposal site in Commencement Bay. A significant part of this project involves the confined placement of 125,000 cubic yards of dredged material at an underwater habitat construction site at Slip 5. The Wapato Creek outfall will also be relocated.
Evergreen Pacific will operate at a temporary location on Terminal 4 while the work is under way.
