Description

As part of the 14-mile Central Link light-rail project, a traction electrification system will be installed. Mass Electric Construction Co. is designing, furnishing and installing the system.

The traction electrification system for a typical modern light-rail system includes an overhead contact system, traction power substations and feeder cables, together with associated substation protective devices, and supervisory control and data acquisition.

The contact system’s elements include catenary poles, overhead wires and system hardware. Included are substation DC feeder cables and sectionalizing switches.

Mass Electric will test nine self-contained 3,000-kilowatt pre-packaged traction-power substations and one field-erected 3,000-kilowatt traction power substation integrated with one unit substation.

The contract also includes design and installation of one pre-packaged traction power DC tie station, one 500-kilowatt field-erected shop traction power station, AC and DC feeder and return cables, and maintenance facility power system controls.

Additionally, Mass Electric will furnish and install an emergency standby 2,000-kilowatt generator set with associated electrical switchgear and cabling.
