Start of construction:

Expected completion date:

Description

A new fuel hydrant system at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport will significantly reduce the number of large diesel tanker trucks operating on the airfield.

Currently, diesel-powered tanker trucks transport fuel from the airport’s loading racks to airplanes parked at the departure and arrival gates.

The existing fuel farm will be improved and three fuel tanks refurbished. Modifications will be made to the existing operations building and a larger operations building will be constructed. Also, a new disaster containment system will be built along with a new fire protection system.

Underground work will include installation of 7,000 linear feet of aircraft fuel piping and 30 fuel hydrant pits. About 20,000 square yards of concrete pavement will be removed and replaced.

The new system will use smaller dispenser trucks or specialized hydrant carts to transfer fuel from the underground hydrants to the aircraft. The dispenser trucks operate fewer hours because they don’t have to make frequent trips to the airport’s fuel loading rack. That is expected to reduce diesel emissions.

Related work includes installation of fuel system valves, and mechanical and electrical controls. The system will be flushed, tested and commissioned.
