Address: Mile posts 18.10-20.82, Snohomish County Cost: $22,810,188 (original contract) $33,970,472 (total) Type of contract: Design-build Start of construction: June 21, 2004 Expected completion date: February 2006 |
Description In an effort to reduce congestion and commute times, the state Department of Transportation is widening state Route 522 between Paradise Lake Road and the Snohomish River from two to four lanes. In addition, WSDOT is refurbishing the intersection at Route 522 and Fales/Echo Lake Road and widening the highway’s shoulders. A new interchange and bridge will create a bypass of the intersection, allowing traffic to flow more smoothly on the highway and create better access to country roads. It will also decrease the possibility of rear-end and side-impact accidents. The project was designed to meet state Department of Ecology and Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations regarding water quality and erosion prevention. WSDOT will create better fish passage by replacing culverts. It will also produce wetlands, and improve stormwater storage and treatment, which will protect wildlife and preserve existing plants and grasses. New retaining walls will stabilize hill slopes and help preserve vegetation. Air quality is expected to improve due to reductions in traffic delays.
