Description The state Department of Transportation is partnering with Sound Transit and the Federal Highway Administration to build an interchange on Interstate 5 at South 317th Street in Federal Way for carpools, vanpools and buses. Crews will build on- and off-ramps in the I-5 median that will connect I-5 carpool lanes to South 317th Street and Sound Transit’s proposed Federal Way Transit Center via a new bridge over the southbound lanes. The project also will improve the pavement on southbound I-5 between the bridge over Military Road and South 320th Street, and will widen and pave the Military Road bridge. Other improvements include illumination, traffic signals, signing, guardrail and drainage. The project will use fill materials that will not erode in heavy rain, which will benefit fish. Three large water quality treatment ponds will help filter runoff from construction and the freeway. The project’s goal is to reduce slowdowns due to weaving or merging traffic.
