Project description: In conjunction with the other local road projects, the Union Avenue to Jackson Avenue HOV project will provide faster and safer travel through the state Route 16 corridor. This area is slow-moving and at high risk for accidents. Vehicles are merging in and out of lanes and exiting and entering ramps at a high capacity. Eastbound and westbound Route 16 traffic between Pearl Street and 12th Street has been moving in what was intended to be the eastbound lanes. The completion of the westbound lanes will remedy that. Four bridges will be constructed: over Pearl Street, Sixth Avenue, 12th Street and an off-ramp to Center Street. Westbound and eastbound lanes will be widened on the Snake Lake bridges. Additionally, 10 miles of HOV lanes will be installed (5 miles in each direction). This project will also include the construction of 5 miles of multiuse trail from 25th Street in Tacoma to Stone Drive in Gig Harbor. New walking and biking trails will allow pedestrians and bikers to travel back and forth while being separated from the freeway and city streets, but still being linked to important connections along the corridor. Noise abatement barriers will be constructed and measures will be taken to prevent any net loss to wetlands. Retaining walls will also be constructed to help prevent or minimize impacts to private and public property.
