SR-24 widening, I-82 to Keys Road

Project description:

The state Route 24 and Nob Hill Boulevard interchange over Interstate 82 is a highly congested area. Approximately 19,000 vehicles use this route daily, and by 2020, this number is projected to reach 36,000. This congestion is a major factor in the high accident rate and lack of economic growth in the area.

This project will decrease congestion, improve commuter safety, and address erosion problems at the Yakima River Bridge piers.

Route 24 will be widened by one lane in each direction from I-82 to Riverside Road, a new bridge will be constructed over the Yakima River, and improvements to the interchange will all help alleviate congestion and accidents.

Upon completion, Route 24 will be a four-lane highway. The interchange will be reconstructed and wider bridges will be built over I-82 and the Yakima River.

Improvements at the two ramp terminals at South 22nd Street and South 33rd Street will be constructed. A new pedestrian bicycle path will cross I-82 and the new Yakima River Bridge will also provide a connection to the greenway and continue along a 12-foot-wide pathway to Riverside Road.

Specific construction includes: removing existing bridges 24/1 and 24/5; installing drainage and storm sewer systems; constructing a prestressed concrete tub girder bridge and prestressed concrete girder bridge approach slabs; constructing two mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls; constructing bicycle/pedestrian pathways; temporary and permanent erosion control; constructing an environmental mitigation area; furnishing and boring steel casing pipes; traffic signal display and detection systems; and traffic control.
