Newport High School remodel

Space between existing buildings will be transformed into the student commons at Newport High School.

Project description:

Modernizations to Newport High School in Bellevue will substantially change the school’s look and utility. Plans include demolishing eight of the 12 campus buildings and replacing them with a 145,000-square-foot, three-story classroom building.

The new building will include a library and administrative offices. It will be connected to the remaining four buildings by internal pedestrian corridors.

Several of the old buildings that are being saved will be modernized: the performing arts theater will be upgraded to hold up to 530 seats; the media and technology center will be upgraded; and the school will be hard-wired for data.

Classrooms will feature interactive white boards and LCD projectors.

The school’s two gymnasiums will be upgraded and improved. The sites where the demolished buildings stood will be partially used for softball and soccer fields.

The project will increase the size of Newport High School to about 223,000 square feet to accommodate its 1,500 students. Students and faculty will be able to move into the new school when most of the civil work is completed in December 2006.
