Evergreen Hospital’s expansion will include a new emergency department building, a new entry, underground parking, and more surgical and patient space.

Project description:

King County Hospital District No. 2 is constructing a new emergency department building and additional space at Evergreen Hospital Medical Center. The expansion will result in 570,000 square feet of rebuilt and new construction.

The project includes a new public entry to the hospital, underground parking, and surgical and patient space and support.

Future development may include a kitchen and other public-access facilities such as retail and dining space, a reflection room and admitting.

Evergreen’s existing emergency department, built in 1985, operates at 180 percent capacity. This structure was built to house a maximum of 28,000 visitors per year, but treated 50,755 patients in 2003 while experiencing as much as 10 percent growth each year.

The new 40,000-square-foot emergency department building will provide 30 acute care rooms and four trauma rooms. It also will have a quick care area to treat serious cases, which account for about 30 percent of the treated patients.

The new building is designed to deliver health services during and following a catastrophic event such as epidemics, natural disasters and mass-scale trauma. The built-in support system has alternate power and water sources and a design that exceeds current seismic standards.

The new surgery and inpatient facility will be constructed with up to six 700-square-foot operating rooms and four catheterization labs with associated pre- and post-operative patient areas, and central service and support areas. There will be 192 patient-care beds installed to replace ones in the original patient rooms, which were not designed for today’s health-care equipment.

Building a new emergency department and hospital patient rooms at the same time will allow for up to $4 million in construction cost savings.
