Puyallup’s Good Sam Hospital received an 80,000-square-foot addition.

This project comprised an 80,000-square-foot addition plus demolition and remodel of existing hospital spaces. It was built only 6 inches away from occupied patient rooms and was bordered on all sides by existing structures.

Hospital staff input was used for locating new power and mechanical devices.

The site had no staging or lay down areas, so all deliveries had to be carefully coordinated. Also, the tower crane was in close proximity to the hospital’s helicopter pad. Communication between the tower crane operator, DPR’s superintendent and the pilots was continuously maintained so the crane could be swung out of the flight path.

DPR reviewed plans and locations of electrical and mechanical devices in the field with hospital personnel to reduce change orders and used a Web-based program to relay plans to all crafts to coordinate installation and resolve conflicts before the start of installation.
