The Associated General Contractors of Washington on May 16 honored 14 members at its 18th Annual Safety and Construction Excellence Awards banquet in Bellevue. The awards recognize top construction projects, outstanding safety programs, diversity development and contributions to the community.

A total of 19 awards were handed out, including nine for safety, eight for construction, one for diversity development and one for community service.

The top project this year, taking the Construction Excellence Grand Award, was Seahawks Stadium by Turner Construction Co. GLY Construction won the Safety Excellence Grand Award.

Construction award nominees were reviewed using the following criteria:

  • Excels in management of a challenging project.

  • Has excellent safety/loss record.

  • Proven sensitivity to environment and surroundings.

  • Excellent client service.

  • Uses innovative construction techniques and/or materials.

Safety award nominees’ safety records were scrutinized for the past two years and each company was evaluated on:

  • Overview of company safety program.

  • Increased employee involvement in safety.

  • New programs, procedures or resources to promote safety.

  • Management’s commitment to safety.

Judges for the safety awards included: Dale Cavanaugh, OSHA Region 10; Melvin James, Washington State Department of Labor and Industries; Justin Crandol, AGC of America safety director; Joe Miller, AGC Oregon-Columbia Chapter; Darrell Tsujii, University of Washington Environmental Health and Safety Department; and Mike Schultz, Puget Sound Clean Air Agency; Construction projects were judged by: Don Bocek, Bocek Properties; Brian Glover, Arup, Seattle Structural Engineers Association president; Tim Jewett, Dykeman, AIA Seattle Board of Directors; John Schaufelberger, University of Washington Construction Management Department chair; and Ben Minnick, Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce.

The AGC of Washington started its Excellence in Construction Awards in 1985 to honor top construction projects in the state. Five years later, the association began paying tribute to member companies with outstanding safety programs. The programs were combined in 1995 to showcase the importance to the industry of skill, integrity and responsibility.
