Douglas fir beams were used extensively inside the new chapel at Newman Center.

The Catholic Newman Center was a technically challenging project located in a busy student housing area next to the University of Washington.

The project was constructed with an innovative system of timber framing, the longest spanning 42 feet, that used a 25-foot fully grouted brick chimney to the north and a brick-clad steel tower to the south as its main structural supports. The exterior was framed with structural steel and masonry, combined with a curtain wall.

Charter donated material and labor to construct a fountain that was beyond the budget of the parish’s fundraising.
