Aecon Buildings has gone 2,190 days without a time-loss accident. The company won a Build Washington safety award five times in a row.

“Zero injuries” is the mantra at Aecon Buildings, and with 2,190 days without a time-loss accident, it shows. President George Kramer started as a laborer and embraces the concept of workers having the right to know about safety policies, procedures and requirements.

Aecon is a member of the AGC Safety Team, and its safety program includes weekly safety meetings at which employees and subcontractors address safety concerns as a team in an open forum. Superintendents are required to perform safety inspections daily, and project managers and engineers perform weekly site inspections. Aecon’s safety manager conducts weekly audits of the site inspections and documentation to ensure compliance.

In addition, Aecon field employees are required to do pre-task planning each morning. The purpose is to not only avoid accidents and low morale, but to ensure each task is performed efficiently with the right personnel and equipment.

Aecon also maintains a strict policy for selecting safety-conscious subcontractors. Subcontractors are required to receive a pre-construction orientation on Aecon’s safety program and are personally given comprehensive training on the site-specific plan. All subcontractors and suppliers are accountable for maintaining safe practices — their actions are reviewed at Aecon’s weekly safety meetings.

To recognize its streak of five consecutive wins in its Build Washington Awards safety category, the judges recognized Aecon with a special achievement award.
