As general superintendent for the state Route 520 pontoon casting basin project, Mike Bonagofski supervised all pile driving, concrete foundations, retaining walls, structural steel and tower crane erection for the casting basin.
Bonagofski’s crane-safety leadership led the casting basin to be constructed within eight months, with up to 12 cranes working in a tight 400-by-1,500-foot area without any recordable injuries or crane accidents. Bonagofski managed 150 staff and craft, and was responsible for the planning, scheduling, coordination and safety of these employees. He worked with subcontractors’ employees in both the planning and construction phases to coordinate activities, including critical lifts and safe access. After a delay due to environmental permitting, Bonagofski’s team gained back time during the casting basin construction and completed the project two months early without incidents — nearly 200,000 hours with zero recordable injuries. The project also won the Kiewit Bridge and Marine District’s safety leadership award and best job award for 2011.
