14. Newland Construction - Founded 1926

Newland Construction was founded in 1926 by George Newland, who came to Washington from Friesland, Holland, in the early 1920s. As a home and farm builder in Holland, he dreamed of expanding in America and brought his wife and children to Everett.

George started building houses one at a time and got new business by word-of-mouth. His success at scheduling eventually led to small industrial projects for the booming mills on the Everett waterfront.

Until 1940, he often worked with Hank Van De Meer, another Dutchman who, like Newland, honored precise engineering. In 1940, Newland and Sons emerged as a commercial and industrial venture that concentrated on Snohomish County's burgeoning growth.

Three sons Simon, Peter and Ben joined their father in the business in the 1960s, a period when the company began to focus on building schools. The four boasted of building most of the high schools between Edmonds and Mount Vernon.

That success led to larger projects and diversification for the company.

In the late 1960s, George retired, the company changed its name to Newland Construction Co. and a new niche was found building hospitals. Shifting to more privately funded work, the firm began to negotiate much of its commercial and industrial work with such clients as Weyerhaeuser and Catholic Health Services.By the 1970-80s, George and Peter Newland, third generation sons and nephews, joined the firm. Aspiring to take the firm to new levels, they focused heavily on negotiated projects and won over clients like Frederick & Nelson, Providence Hospital and numerous health care agencies.

Today, Newland is in its fourth generation of family management and ownership. George Newland and his four sons Si, Sam, Tom and Matt run the mid-sized firm. The company employs 40-50 management and crew professionals.

Two of the firm's current high-profile projects are the New Women and Children's Hospital for the Sisters of Providence Everett and a coffee roasting plant and corporate headquarters for Cascade Coffee of Snohomish County.
