Renton Transit Center

Location: Burnett Avenue South, between South Second and Fourth streets, Renton

Owner/developer: City of Renton and King County Metro Transit

Project team: Gary Merlino Construction Co., general and concrete contractor; Merritt+Pardini, architect; and Stoneway Concrete, ready-mix supplier

New commercial space, apartments and condominiums have helped start a renaissance in downtown Renton. With the additional residents came increased demand for buses, necessitating the need for a new transit center. The existing bus transit center had only kiosks on the sidewalk.

The new transit center features colored concrete in the crosswalks, bus shelter plaza and sidewalks. Also, new shelters, benches and kiosks were installed for transit patrons.

Motion-activated lighted crosswalks were installed to help improve safety in the pedestrian-bus areas. Also, a fiber optic lighted network was embedded in the concrete.
