The project team said using cast-in-place concrete for the state Route 519 project helped shave a year from the original project schedule. The work involved building an off-ramp, overpass and pedestrian amenities.

access project, Phase 2

Location: Seattle

Owner/developer: Washington State Department of Transportation

Project team: Kiewit Infrastructure West Co., general contractor; Gary Merlino Construction Co., concrete contractor; Hough Beck & Baird, architect; Aecom, structural engineer; CalPortland, ready-mix supplier

The Washington State Department of Transportation’s state Route 519 intermodal access project resulted in a new bridge over the railroad tracks on South Royal Brougham Way by Safeco Field and an off-ramp that connects interstates 5 and 90 to Edgar Martinez Drive South.

The project team selected a post-tensioned cast-in-place concrete box superstructure design for its flexibility, economy, constructability and aesthetics. The work required 15,000 cubic yards of concrete.

Using cast-in-place concrete instead of precast concrete or prefabricated steel girders shaved a full year from the original project schedule. The use of cast-in-place box girder bridges allowed for construction to begin immediately following the completion of the superstructure design.

The east and west pedestrian plaza areas beneath the Royal Brougham Way overpass were constructed with concrete paving, allowing the use of multiple patterns and colors.
