A new Safeway in Seattle’s Pinehurst neighborhood is the first in Washington to have a completely pervious concrete parking area. The project has earned a LEED silver rating. The parking area uses more than 68,000 square feet of pervious concrete pavement. The main pedestrian areas — sidewalks, crosswalks and the store entrances — are integrally colored in red. The design made use of the ability to color pervious concrete to identify specific areas for parking, truck traffic, pedestrian areas or other facility features, and demonstrates the material’s decorative capabilities. Stormwater runoff is infiltrated directly into the ground, complying with new state Department of Ecology water-quality standards. “Pervious is great,” said Bryan Gootee, construction manager for Safeway. “I have a concrete parking lot and I don’t have the expense of a traditional storm system.”
