Strand Hunt Construction took home top honors with the Eagle of Excellence Award and Public Construction Award for the new Redmond High School.

The $38 million-plus project, one of the largest ever undertaken by the Lake Washington School District, involved building the new school and demolishing the existing facility while classes were in session.

Challenges included: sequencing completion of new structures and demolition of the old; minimizing disruption to in-session classes in the existing buildings; maintaining quality standards while using a wide variety of finishes; and protecting the sensitive environment.

The new 210,000-square-foot campus replaced 200,000 square feet of existing buildings and portables. The new complex contains nine school facilities including a library, performing arts center and gymnasium, as well as new tennis courts, sports fields and an additional parking lot. The stadium, grandstands and bleachers are the only vestiges left of the old school complex.

The new library serves as a focal point and connects the various facilities, including the sports hall, performing arts center and science rooms. The building is rotated slightly, setting it apart from the rest of the buildings, which all run east to west and north to south.

After initially leaping ahead of schedule with completion on course for December 2002, design changes moved the date to summer 2003. Then, owner-requested sequencing changes to keep using the old parking lot delayed the demolition and start of athletic field construction. With the revised schedule, Strand Hunt expects to complete the athletic fields by this summer.

During 114,753 hours worked, there was only one recordable OSHA incident, earning Strand Hunt an incident rate of 1.74.

The project team included: Chalker Putnam Collins & Scott, structural engineer; BCE Engineers, mechanical engineer; SVR Design, civil engineer; and ABC members Ralph's Concrete Pumping, CLP Resources and Audio Acoustics.
