S.D. Deacon blended an addition to Faith Lutheran Church by using
similar stone and stucco elements.

Faith Lutheran Church addition

Owner: Faith Lutheran Church
Architect: Architect: Broweleit Peterson Hammer Architects

The original Faith Lutheran Church facilities were built in 1953, and the proposed two-story, 13,000-square-foot addition used similar stone building materials and stucco accenting to match the existing structure. The original plan called for excavating a hillside and existing parking lot, but that was beyond the church’s budget.

S.D. Deacon proposed a cast-in-place concrete wall with an earth and concrete ramp walkway against the building that used landscape retaining blocks to provide required slopes away from the alley to the building walkway. This value engineering measure saved the church more than $100,000.

Since the church remained open during construction, S.D. Deacon took special care to ensure the safety of parishioners by staking all temporary fencing and restricting access to the work site. The team also held classes for the church’s day care students about the hazards of a work site in order to stave off youthful curiosity.

A unique challenge of the project was coordinating church volunteers, who worked on the site primarily recycling vintage materials. Working with inexperienced, unskilled volunteers increased the importance of careful safety training and supervision.

S.D. Deacon completed the 6,930-hour project on time and with no OSHA recordable injuries.

The project team included: EQE International, structural engineer; and ABC members Democon and Exterior Metals.
