For the Summit III project, Nuprecon demolished a six-story, 45,000-square-foot concrete building in the heart of downtown Bellevue. An attached, single-story, 7,000-square-foot concrete structure was demolished as well. The team first stripped out all soft debris from the interior of the buildings. By craning Bobcats to each floor, workers were able to plow the debris into an area where sections of each floor had been broken out, creating an interior chute that allowed for total control of all debris, as well as containing dust within the envelope of the building. Materials were sorted on site, then trucked to local recyclers. Nuprecon used a 98-foot-reach track hoe with a cracker attachment to crush sections of the exterior structural beams. After demolishing the top two floors, the team used a track hoe with a breaker to take down the remainder of the structure. Final site preparation included processing and sending concrete from the building remains for recycling, as well as removing all surrounding hardscapes. Throughout the project, Nuprecon took special care to avoid damage to a neighboring office building and ensure pedestrian safety outside the work area. All Nuprecon workers attended weekly safety meetings to review the site's safety plan and discussed pertinent safety issues daily. As a result of the team's diligence, the project was completed on schedule with no injuries during the 3,186 hours worked.
