"Health care and higher education is where the work is," said Jim Duncan, CEO. "Wireless technology is in high demand, especially in higher education."
Current technology projects include the University of Washington Law School and University of California Berkeley, Stanley Hall.
With a staff size of 115 and projected 2002 revenues of $14.6 million, the Seattle firm claims distinction as the nation's largest specialty electrical engineering and technology consulting firm. It continues to expand its technology studio with the addition of five staff members this year.
"Our technology consulting practice, including wireless, audio-visual systems, network cabling infrastructure, and distance learning systems backlog has grown by 200 percent to $4 million," said Duncan.
In the health care field, "telehealth" has become a major market focus, he said. Telehealth links patients with physicians using voice, video and data technology, enabling them to transmit X-rays digitally across vast distances for diagnosis.
Sparling is now at work on major health care projects in nine states, including Sacred Heart Medical Center in Springfield, Ore., Children's Hospital in Denver and the University of Texas Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. A project closer to home is Providence Everett Medical Center's Pavilion for Women and Children, a five-story, 152,000-square-foot center devoted to the care of women, infants and children in the north Puget Sound region.
Sparling has made advances in sustainable design with a photovoltaic system for the new Seattle City Hall and sustainable consulting at The Evergreen State College, Bellevue Community College and Washington State University. Projects completed this year include the Museum of Glass in Tacoma and Central Washington Hospital Surgery Expansion in Wenatchee.
