The past year brought slight growth and significant reorganization for MulvannyG2, the third largest architecture firm in Washington and the ninth largest in the United States.

The firm reorganized internally, including preparing for CEO Jerry Lee’s transition to chairman and President Mitch Smith’s switch to CEO at the end of this year.

“We’ve really been focusing on repositioning ourselves,” said Smith. He said the firm’s approach has always been to align itself as a strategic partner with its ambitious clients as they spread around the globe. Major clients include such industry giants as Nike, Target, Costco and Lowe’s.

“As their ambitions increase, we have to make adjustments to make sure we keep up with them,” said Smith.

Smith said MulvannyG2 is especially proud of two projects: the new Tacoma Convention Center; and an unusual mixed-use project for Costco in Vancouver, B.C. Rather than the usual big-box store in a sea of parking, the Vancouver warehouse store, currently under construction, will sit beneath four residential towers.

The firm has been Costco’s architect since 1984, just a year after the Issaquah-based retailer’s founding.

With offices in Portland, Irvine, Calif., Washington, D.C., and Shanghai, only about half of MulvannyG2’s 340 employees work in its main Bellevue office.

MulvannyG2’s projects in China have helped the firm prosper despite a sluggish economy in the U.S., according to Smith. About 10 percent of the firm’s work is in international projects.

The firm’s retail work and mixed-use projects also continue to be strong, he said.
