Staying diverse in its client base has helped Floyd Snider McCarthy weather the weak economy, according to principal Dan McCarthy.

The firm provides services to clients with contamination and permitting issues related to historic practices, property purchase and redevelopment, and current operations. Clients include municipalities, developers, port authorities, A/E firms and attorneys.

“We focus on cleanup and associated redevelopment of upland properties, and sediment and in-water cleanup,” said McCarthy. “The key thing I would say about economic forecasts is that for us diversity of client type and project type is crucial. Because we have a large division of upland work related to compliance and redevelopment for private and public clients, we’re doing quite well.”

Current large projects include sediment remediation of Todd Pacific Shipyards in Seattle, where Todd Pacific and Lockheed Martin entered into agreements with the Environmental Protection Agency to dredge and dispose of shipyard contaminants. Floyd Snider McCarthy is also the environmental construction manager on the Thea Foss Waterway remediation project in Tacoma, to resolve Superfund contamination issues. Such projects take several years before they can reach the construction phase, McCarthy said.

“Our typical client is interested in having us participate with them to figure out the best strategy,” he said. “We’re a little more strategy and planning oriented than many firms our size. As a result we have pretty robust relationships with our clients, which allows us to continue relations with them over time.”
