ON THE COVER: Callison Architecture won an award from Modern Healthcare magazine for design of the $35 million, 152,000-square-foot St. Joseph Outpatient Center in Tacoma. Sellen Construction was the general contractor.

In this special publication on the design and construction of Health Care projects, we discover that, sometimes, the best place for a clinic is where you least expect it.

We also discuss the role retailers have in health care, filling a need for diagnosis-related services that aren't met by the health care system.

One of the forefront issues in design today is green building. As members of the medical profession pledge to "do no harm," how does this fit into an environmental context? Can hospitals, which often consume higher quantities of energy and resources than most other buildings, find a way to incorporate sustainable design?

What role do private investors play in funding new health care projects?

And how can you seismically upgrade the outside of a hospital without disrupting what goes on inside?

What about when those disruptions come from the inside? We discuss ways to cut down on noise related to vital hospital functions like mechanical ventilation systems and medical equipment.

We also look at the detailed planning and organization involved in installing medical equipment in a new health care project.

Finally, we discuss how quality-improvement process can improve the way hospitals look and function.
