In addition to architecture and urban design, Hewitt Architects specializes in urban open space and master planning. Largest current projects include the city of Bellevue Major Public Open Space and the city of Seattle Civic Center Master Plan.
The landscape business at Hewitt Architects provides integrated, multidisciplinary, extended services to architecture clients. The firm also pursues landscape work as a subconsultant to engineering and architecture firms.
Staff levels in architecture have increased significantly this year at Hewitt Architects, which means urban design and landscape staff will increase in the near term. There is typically a lag time between architecture hiring and landscape hiring.
Revenues over the last two years have remained constant and will increase this year due to increased volume of work.
Work on the city of Seattle Civic Center establishes a design approach and guidelines for two complete blocks in downtown Seattle. These blocks, both sloping to the west, will accommodate civic buildings such as city council chambers and other city departments, as well as an expansive, public open space. A central, level, multi-purpose plaza will be formed by buildings to the north and east and by terraced gardens to the south and west.
Construction of the first phase of the City of Bellevue's Major Public Open Space is nearly complete. This 15,000-square-foot space is located along Bellevue's Sixth Street pedestrian corridor, between Bellevue Square and the Transit Center. Adjacent to the new Bellevue Galleria, the plaza edges will be activated by Galleria retail, dining terraces, and pedestrian corridor activity.
The central ellipse features an interactive water sculpture by artist Nancy Hammer and a freestanding glass and steel pavilion serving food and beverages.
An existing, mature oak, located on the centerline of the corridor, has been retained and defines the north side of first phase of construction. It will become the heart of the open space when the rest is developed.
In addition to the open space plan in Bellevue and the civic center project for the city of Seattle, Hewitt Architects is at work on King Street Center; Redmond Town Center Housing; Carpenter Hall Housing; Merrill Gardens Housing; Western and Cedar Apartments; King County Transit Oriented Development, transit center and housing; St. Thomas Middle School; and Larry's Market at Redmond Town Center.
