Susan Black and Associates, Inc.

Year founded: 1994
Annual revenue: $400,000

SB&A provides landscape architecture and planning services. The firms largest project in the last year is a football stadium and transit center in Mount Vernon.

Susan Black and Associates recent projects have been interesting and diverse, ranging from the design of a family aquatics center for Pendleton, Ore. to consolidating 33 environmental studies and plans into a concise, readable plan for parks and open space in Kitsap County. SB&A was recently selected to implement King County's ballfield initiative. Over 24 baseball and other fields will be designed and constructed. The firm is currently monitoring construction of King County's South Ballfields Park, which includes four little league fields, an adult softball field, parking, playground, picnic areas and extensive storm water and irrigation systems.

The practice includes projects typically led by architects or engineers. For example, after completing a feasibility study to determine the need for a community center for West Hill (an unincorporated portion of King County west of Renton) the county retained SB&A to lead a team of architects and engineers to design and monitor construction of the West Hill Community Center. Construction for this 5000-square-foot facility was completed and it opened in April of 1998.

SB&A is currently leading a team of engineers and biologists in the design and development of a regional storm water detention pond for Highline Community College. SB&A is designing the required maintenance vehicle access as pedestrian walkways to allow students and classes to visit various landscape environments including wetlands, riparian, meadow and forest. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 1999.

SB&A is heading a multidisciplinary team in the planning and design of a facilities complex that includes a high school football stadium, district bus transportation center, soccer and baseball fields, and a boys and girls club for the Mount Vernon School District.

Other recent and current projects include public involvement and landscape architecture for the Queen Anne historic Observatory Water Tower replacement, the Katz Memorial Sculpture Garden and the Sylvan Theater Renovation for the University of Washington; master plans for two waterfront parks in Anacortes; elementary Schools in the Lake Washington and Tukwila School Districts and the Maury Island Regional Park master plan for King County. Specialty housing involvement includes the new Compass Center for homeless women in Seattle and a home for battered women in King County. SB&A has recently been selected as landscape architect for the Hiawatha Place project in Seattle.

The office has recently moved to new offices at 200 Roy Street to provide room for expansion.
