Though Weisman Design Group remained busy throughout the downturn, principal Mike Kleer said business is “picking up a lot” now that the economy is rebounding.

“We’re definitely feeling the workload is increasing,” he said. “The whole mood of our clients is more positive.”

A more competitive real estate environment has in some ways been a boon to landscape architects, Kleer said.

Developers “have to position their projects a little better to be successful,” he said. The upshot is that they’re “putting more value on the work we do.”

Kleer singled out Trilogy at Redmond Ridge as one of the firm’s most interesting current projects. The 1,500-home development for empty nesters has a diverse array of landscaping needs, including pocket parks, a school, community center and right-of-way plantings.

The housing market in general has remained strong, despite concerns it may be peaking. Kleer said the office market remains cool, but school projects are “exploding.”

In preparation for busier times ahead, Kleer said the firm is getting ready to add more staff.
