While Johnson Braund’s architecture and interior design studio finds work outside Puget Sound, its four-person landscape studio usually stays closer to home.

“We are uniquely situated south of Seattle,” said marketing coordinator Karla Lindula. “We try to keep in touch with smaller cities that can appreciate a smaller firm.”

The firm does take occasional private work outside Puget Sound, such as landscape designs for Marriott in Boise, Idaho, and Lancaster, Pa. But, with 75 percent of its work on public projects, most jobs are in the area.

The firm recently worked on architecture and landscape architecture for the Senior Housing Assistance Group’s Rainier Court housing project at Bitter Lake.

While smaller municipalities are on limited budgets, work has steadily increased in the last several years, Lindula said. The firm recently boosted its landscape architecture studio by one person, the first addition in three years. “We’re trying to go further into the public projects realm and really establish ourselves there,” she said.
