Bids were recently opened for the construction contract to extensively remodel and expand an existing building at Bellevue College into a new hub and flexible instructional space for the community college's art programs.
A total of eight bids were received, with three low bidders. The low bidders are Comer General Contractors of Everett, with a bid of approximately $31.3 million; Marpac Construction of Seattle, with a bid of approximately $31.2 million; and Swinerton Builders of Seattle, which came in at around $33.8 million.
The engineer's estimate for the contract was approximately $36 million.
Mithun is the project architect.
The selected contractor will build a roughly 40,000-square-foot addition to the existing C Building-North and remodel around 23,000 square feet in the current building. The remodel will impact both the interior and exterior. Around 6,000 square feet of the existing structure is to be demolished.
C Building-North is a two-story classroom building that houses the college's arts programs. The remodeled building will be connected to the addition via a new central atrium wrapped in glass. The resulting new building will total around 54,000 square feet and be called the W Building.
The addition will house a maker space with 3D printers, a computer milling machine and laser cutters. The maker space will be adjoined to the atrium and will open out to a new exterior maker's terrace. The W Building will also have classrooms, a variety of study areas, and spaces for technology and visual arts programs.
The college wants to create a modern space that serves as the new hub for arts programs and brings together programs and students from across campus.
The C Building is located at the center of the Bellevue College campus, which is at 3000 Landerholm Circle S. in South Bellevue.
The DJC previously reported that the goal is to break ground this summer. Construction is expected to take between 15 and 18 months.
C Building-North is attached to C Building-South. That portion of the building houses a student union and cafeteria and is currently being renovated. New bathrooms and lighting have already been added, and the dining area has been upgraded. The student union area is currently under renovation. According to the college's website, that work should be completed in May. Upgrades are also underway at a serving area and kitchen. Those should also be completed in the spring. Pinchiff Mechanical of Tukwila is the general contractor for the C Building-South upgrades. Hargis is the engineer on that project.
