The 100-unit building is rising on a city-owned site in downtown Redmond.

Redmond's affordable housing stock is set to expand to the tune of 100 units as work has started on a new permanent supportive housing building at 16725 Cleveland St.

The project is being developed by Plymouth Housing in partnership with the city. The new building will be six stories and will serve individuals exiting chronic homelessness making 0% to 30% of the area median income — which is up to $28,800 a year.

In addition to the units, which are all studios, there will be ground-floor office space, interior and exterior resident amenity spaces, including green space with seating, and approximately 2,150 square feet of commercial space. The building will have 24/7 staffing and onsite services for people experiencing homelessness, both provided by Plymouth.

The property is rising on a city-owned parcel a few steps east of Downtown Redmond Station. The site was once home to the Motley Zoo Animal Rescue building. The city purchased the parcel in 2019.

Seattle's Environmental Works Community Design Center is the architect. Walsh Construction is the builder and broke ground in October. The building is expected to open in early 2027.

The project, shown earlier this month, is above grade.

DJC readers might recall that Plymouth had originally intended to build this project in Kenmore, on land owned by the city. A public backlash prompted the city council to reject the proposal and Redmond stepped in to offer its site for the project in 2024.

Redmond has set a goal of adding more than 4,000 units of permanent supportive housing by 2050.

Funding sources for the Cleveland Street project include the state Department of Commerce.

This is Plymouth's second permanent supportive housing development on the Eastside, following the 2023 opening of Plymouth Crossing in Bellevue.
