Climate planning rules take effect

OLYMPIA — The state Department of Commerce filed final rules Dec. 26 concluding a multi-year effort guiding communities to establish the first Climate Element under the Growth Management Act (GMA).

The final rules take effect Jan. 24, allowing the department to finalize climate planning guidance for communities updating their comprehensive plans to incorporate the new climate element; for cities and counties that must create a resilience sub-element; and for communities pursuing a greenhouse gas reduction sub-element.
