Church plans 34 First Hill condos

SEATTLE — A gravel-surfaced parking lot at 1530 E. Fir St. has long served the parishioners at Goodwill Baptist Church, which lies across the street to the south. That's in the Squire Park neighborhood, about a block north of East Yesler Way.

Across the region, with their aging congregations in decline, churches are adding affordable rental housing to their often underutilized properties. Others sell and see their buildings demolished.
