On Capitol Hill, BNBuilders started work two summers ago at 1120 12th Ave. for the planned new high school building at Seattle Academy. The city-issued temporary certificate of occupancy came last month. And, right on schedule, students began classes there this week.
LMN designed the five-story, 85,000-square-foot project, which replaced some small old commercial buildings next to the existing main campus. That's just south of East Union Street, on the cusp of First Hill.
Some still call the school the Seattle Academy of Arts & Sciences, and there's a bright red new SAAS sign outside the front door. (Studio Matthews designed that and other signage.) A DJC visit last week, before classes began, also found signs of occupancy; and a SAAS parent confirmed that staff had already begun moving into the new building.
The project team included Coughlin Porter Lundeen, civil; GeoEngineers, geotechnical; Studio TJP, historical consultant; PAE, MEP design; Heffron Transportation; Seneca Group, project manager; Tube Art, signage builder and installer; and US Bank, which provided the construction loan.
The project entered design review with a nominal value of $65 million. It includes about 55 underground parking, around 30 classrooms, offices, amenity areas and a dramatic atrium entry.
