The association started its Excellence in Construction Awards in 1985 to honor the top projects in the state built by its members. Five years later, the safety awards were created. Both were combined in 1995 to showcase the importance of skill, integrity and responsibility in the construction industry.

Construction award nominees were reviewed by the following criteria:
  • Excels in the management of a challenging project.
  • Has excellent safety/loss record.
  • Proven sensitivity to environment and surroundings.
  • Excellent client service.
  • Innovative construction techniques and/or materials.

Nominees for the safety awards had their safety records for the past two years scrutinized. Each company was evaluated on:
  • The overview of company safety program.
  • Increased employee involvement in safety.
  • New programs, procedures or resources used to promote safety.
  • Management’s commitment to safety.

This year’s judges for the construction awards were: Don Bocek of D. Bocek Co., a past AGC of Washington president; John Schaufelberger from the Construction Management Department at the University of Washington; Norm Strong, a partner with the Miller/Hull Partnership and president of the AIA Seattle; and Benjamin Minnick, Journal construction editor.

Safety judges were: Carolyn Guglielmo, AGC of America’s safety and health services director; Joe Miller from the AGC Oregon-Columbia Chapter; Jim Nolan of the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency; Darrell Tsujii from the UW Environmental Health and Safety Department; and Dana Steele of the state Department of Labor and Industries.
