The No. 2 Tail Gas Unit was an environmental compliance project to reduce sulfur dioxide emissions, requiring construction of a new process unit within the confines of an existing sulphur plant, inside an operating refinery. The project used both conventional and modular construction techniques to install process piping and equipment, including all foundations within an extremely small area. Initial sequencing had to be changed and closely monitored due to delivery delays of major components. Computer modeling was used to rig 50-ton process components where only feet and sometime inches were to spare. There were no OSHA recordable incidents in more than 100,000 worker hours on the project. |
