North Creek Storage Facility

Location: 18707 N. Creek Parkway, Bothell

Owner/developer: King County

Project team:Frank Coluccio Construction, general contractor; Skaar Construction, concrete contractor; Streeter & Associates, architect; Tetra Tech, structural engineer; Cadman, ready-mix supplier

The project is a 6 million-gallon reinforced concrete wastewater storage facility. It was built underground and is topped by a community sports field and several buildings.

Building the tank required a 40-foot-deep excavation that was shored with sheetpile and internal bracing. Over 22,000 cubic yards of concrete and 1,724 tons of reinforcing steel were used for the cast-in-place tank.

Using concrete gave the contractor versatility in how and when it could make placements around the shoring. Concrete also allowed the tank to be built without a liner.

The life expectancy of the tank is over 50 years.

Finalists in the category included the Portland Avenue Reservoir replacement project in Tacoma and the Cedar Water Treatment Facility in Renton.
