1999 WACA Awards - Special Applications/Artistic

The winning entry for the Special Applications/Artistic category was the REI store at Redmond Town Center. The project used ready mixed concrete to fulfill the project's structural, architectural and scheduling needs.

REI wanted the building to have a turn-of-the-century wood texture look. To create that look with concrete, a single-sided, rough-sawn fir finish form was used. First, a full

structural and architectural mock-up was made to validate the concept. Then, the light-weight form was built to the entire 53-foot height of the building and architectural shotcrete was applied to provide a seamless vertical wood-textured finish. Absent are pour joints, tie-rod holes and reveal strips.

The project team included: REI, owner/developer; Skilling Ward Magnusson Barkshire, structural engineer; GLY Construction, general contractor; Mithun Partners, architect; Air Placed Concrete Specialists, concrete contractor; and Stoneway Concrete, ready mixed supplier.
