1999 WACA Awards - Paving

SR 395
Badly rutted asphalt was replaced with concrete at several intersections of state Route 395.

Intersection improvements to state Route 395 in Kennewick won the Paving category. The project consisted of 1.86 miles of improvements covering the intersections at Seventh, 10th, 19th and 27th avenues.

Badly rutted asphalt was removed and replaced with Portland cement concrete pavement. The state Department of Transportation designed the pavement sections with a one-day paving mix. The contractor was responsible for scheduling asphalt removal, grade preparation and placing the concrete at each intersection in four calendar days. One half of each intersection was constructed at a time, allowing traffic to use Route 395 while the intersections were improved.

A Whiteman roller screed was used to finish 17,910 square meters of pavement. The contractor choose to use the maturity meter, a non-destructive testing method, to determine concrete strength - allowing the intersection at 27th Avenue to be opened 18 hours after placement.

The project team included: WSDOT, owner/developer; and Acme Materials & Construction, general contractor, concrete contractor and ready mixed supplier.
