The special “Eagle of Excellence” award was created this year for this exemplary project, which also took top honors in the Commercial Construction category.

Located southeast of downtown Everett, the Everett Station project by Wilder Construction involved building a multi-modal transportation center for Community Transit, Everett

Transit, Sound Transit and Greyhound bus services as well as Sounder commuter rail and Amtrak. The 11-acre site, bordered on the east by Burlington Northern Santa Fe heavy rail lines, includes a four-story, 65,000-square-foot station, bus platforms covered by canopies, garden-style landscaping, street and utility improvements, bicycle locks, drop off areas and an asphalt paved park-and-ride lot for more than 1,000 vehicles.

Wilder Construction’s contract with the city of Everett mixed two different types of construction contracts into one by choosing Wilder as the prime contractor while subcontracting a major portion of the station building and site canopies to Haskell Corp.

In addition to coordinating civil work around construction of the station house, the work was further complicated by its proximity to the existing heavy rail line, which required coordination with the railroad and extra precautions to ensure worker and public safety. There were no recordable medical accidents in the nearly 40,000 work hours on the job.

During construction, Wilder encountered 20,000 tons of petroleum-contaminated soils that required environmental supervision for excavation. In addition, although there were numerous design changes throughout the duration of the project, Wilder utilized a full-time onsite project management team to oversee documentation and construction activities, resulting in an excellent relationship with the city as the project was completed.
