The project was a $2 million, year-long renovation of the West Coast’s largest Navy-operated marine fuel terminal, located in Manchester. Work included upgrades to fuel loading arms, repairs to the fuel loading pier, paving containment berms and roads, installation of heating systems and oil-water separators, renovation of several 50,000-gallon tanks, an overhaul of the treatment plant, and replacement of the fire water system valves and hydrants. Project challenges included working in close proximity to highly flammable materials, working in areas accessible only by water and scheduling work around the tides, plus working in confined areas such as tunnels, valve pits and inside fuel tanks while maintaining proper air quality and overall worker safety. Additionally, the high demand for fuel for Navy ships and other government entities required exact scheduling and completion of work. |
