Architect: Mahlum Architects
Engineers: Notkin (mechanical) and Sparling (electrical)

This $8.89 million project transformed two floors of existing space into a new Level III intensive care nursery and expanded the hospital’s Family Maternity Center and Children’s Services. Special care was taken to ensure that hospital operations were impacted as little as possible and that patients were not disturbed by construction activity.

One special challenge was the need to access utilities for the fourth floor through the third floor surgery suites, requiring Strand Hunt to create its own sealed-off workspace with temporary walls and security doors to maintain the sterility of the surgical suites while accessing the ceiling of each operating room to perform plumbing work.

As a time and money saving step, Strand Hunt created mock-up rooms to ensure the design and placement of cabinetry, and access to gas lines and electrical outlets were optimal. Hospital staff then had the opportunity to make changes to better accommodate both patients’ needs and efficiency of operation. Strand Hunt also avoided project delays by working with a subcontractor to overcome production issues, allowing the hospital to hold its scheduled dedication ceremony and open the facility on schedule.
